What now?

There are so many things to plan and figure out when it comes to your wedding. Surprisingly, the one that can take the most time is the dream dress.

All the different styles, shades of white and ivory, what looks good on you and what doesn't, it can get overwhelming pretty quickly. Ultimately, you want to give yourself a good six months to find "the" dress. It can take up to 18 weeks to have one delivered, and they always need to be altered.

After you have your dress, make an alterations appointment. It's best to start this process about two months ahead to make sure everything is perfect. Even if you think your dress fits fine, make an appointment anyway just to check. You never know what can be don't to make you look even more beautiful, or make the dress feel better on you.

Pretty much anything you'd want to be done to your dress is possible. If you don't like the type of bustle it has, that can be changed. Want a sweetheart neckline instead of straight? Easy! Adding straps or removing them is also common. We can even add sequins, beads, or lace to get that look you're dreaming of.

So what should you do to help your fantastic alterations team? Be prepared, and don't be afraid to ask. The typical appointment lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and in that time bring up any worries or ideas you have. You should also bring some things with you:

-Bra and any undergarments you're planning to wear
-Shoes you'll be wearing (No shoes yet? Bring a pair that's the heel height you're planning on)
-Any accessories you would like to see with the dress
-A friend (you'll need some help getting dressed on the big day, we'll show your helper how)

Overall, everything about your wedding should be fun and exciting. So remember to breathe, in the end everything will be perfect because you're with the one you love.

Friday February 13th Victoria Glenn of Victoria's Bridal Couture and V custom Design spent the evening judging Seattle's second annual Project Red Dress. This year the event took place a the Fairmont Olympic Hotel. Rosie Kohlmeier, a New York Fashion Academy student took first place and a $3,000 scholarship.

Rosie Kohlmeier's design was fresh, original and impeccably crafted. All Five judges including our own Victoria Glenn, and Nick Verreos of Project Runway fame inspected the construction of the gowns prior to the runway show.

"The criteria for this competition were construction, finishing techniques, fabric selection, fit on the models and the overall design. We've done most of the judging already—we are only looking for one more criterion, which is how the garment moves on the runway," said Glenn. "We were all drawn to the more dramatic gowns initially, but ultimately it comes down to technique and craftsmanship. We picked a dress that does not catch your eye at first."

Rosie Kohlmeier is the second winner of Project Red Dress the first being the 2008 winner Karly Orr also a New York Fashion Academy Student.

"I can't raise my arms!" "How can I dance?"

Back in the eighties sleeves were the rage on wedding gowns along with sequins and oversized butt bows. Since the age of strapless dresses, sleeves are rare but the questions are the same.

Basically there's one answer. Fitted or tailored sleeves that are attached to a fitted bodice do not allow for movement. The most you can expect is to raise your arms to a 45 degree angle. If you look at the picture to the right, she won't get much more than that. Hugging is kept to around the waist. Dancing is done with some elbow movement. Think demur. In the past, women who wore gowns like this on a daily basis, and I'm talking the tailored 40's where pretty dainty ladies.

Now there's one thing that can be done, and that is to put gussets in the underarm. It's a crescent shaped piece of fabric that allows the sleeve to separate under the arm from the bodice as you raise your arm. When the arm is down, it accordians together. Will it show? Yes, it will show a bit. This will get you about 20 more degrees of movement. Not always the most flattering, but a solution.

So you found the PERFECT wedding dress and you went online to find a better price than your local bridal salon. The dress you've been drooling over is way over your budget but you just gotta have it. And you find it from a web site in China,direct from the factory for a hundred bucks and free shipping and NO tax. Woo Hoo! Score? Not a chancein hell, baby. Its a scam.

Go ahead and spend your hundred bucks and see what you get. You aren't going to get that Stephen Yearick that sells for $2400. You aren't even going to get close. What you will get is a poorly made dress out of cheap fabric and a bad fit that doesn't look like the pictue. I've seen the knock off's, I wouldn't let my dog sleep on them.

Yes, most wedding dress factories are in China. Most Chinese manufacturer an excellent quality dress. But like any other business, there are superior companies, and there are inferior companies. There are factories in the cities and there are small factories in the rural areas. The big major factories are contracted to the major bridal manufactures worldwide and they aren't going to sell to you or even me. They have all the work they can handle turning out a superior product. They aren't marketing to the public. They don't have to.

The small factories are out trolling for business. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't get hit on by a Skype call from China or an email promising me the moon if I import their dresses. They don't own the rights to produce the dress in the picture. They don't own the rights to the picture. They don't have the pattern for the dress. They are breaking every copyright rule known in the world. The manufacturers will shut them down, but they pop right back up using another name. My friend who owns a major bridal manufacturer said that they have people working around the clock to keep these dresses out of the market. Why? They don't want a bride who thinks she is buying that brand of dress to be disappointed whens she receives a piece of crap. And, they have a reputation to honor. They don't want their name on inferior dresses that they don't manufacturer. They've designed the dresses, photographed the dresses, manafactured the dress and marketed the dress in their own image. Someone comes along and steals all their work...not quite fair, is it?

What the inferior manufacturer will produce is a similar looking dress in a color that you request. Or maybe not. I've known of a bride who ordered an ivory dress and got something along the line of a light dirty brown. Will the dress be exact? No way. Will it have the same fit? No way. Will it be the same quality? No way. Will I be happy? No way. Will I be shopping for another dress? Guaranteed.

These dresses are hard to alter because they don't have the cut and the inside boning to keep the dresses up and in place. Without boning, the dress won't stay up, it will droop down. The beading you love on the original may be glued on appliques or cheap hot pressed caviar beading, which are like dots that come off when you get warm. You can't put this under a sewing machine because they gum up the machine and snag the dress fabric. Most seamstresses won't touch one of these dresses.

The costs from shipping from China has escalated 5 times in the past year due to the cost of oil. It is reflected in the cost of the dress. Say you are spending a hundred bucks and shipping costs $75.00. You are buying a $25 wedding dress. That will barely cover the cost of the zippers, thread and buttons on the dress. You CAN buy a great dress for a hundred bucks through sales at a bridal salon or on clearance from Ebay. My bridal salon is currently running a clearance sale for wedding dresses at $99 with dresses that retail up to $1500. I need to clear them out to make room for new merchandise. That's a real deal and you can see what you are getting in person. And there is a big difference between a cheap wedding dress and a bargain wedding dress. Learn the difference.

If you are the gambling type, then go ahead, order the dress. But prepare for major disappointment! If its too good to be true, then it usually is. Take my advice, there's nothing I hate more than an upset bride.

The Perfect Mother's Dress

Jennifer's wedding day was fast approaching.

Nothing could dampen her excitement -- not even her parents' nasty divorce. Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear and would be the best dressed mother-of-the-bride ever!

A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father's new young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother! Jennifer asked her step mom to exchange it, but she refused. 'Absolutely not. I look like a million bucks in this dress, and I'm wearing it,' she replied.

Jennifer told her mother who graciously said, 'Never mind sweetheart. I'll get another dress. After all, it's your special day.' A few days later, they went shopping and did find another gorgeous dress.

When they stopped for lunch, Jennifer asked her mother, 'Aren't you going to return the other dress? You really don't have another occasion where you could wear it.'

Her mother just smiled and replied, 'Of course I do, dear. I'm wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding.'

Tips for a Stress-Free Shopping Experience

1.) Although we welcome walk-ins, an appointment will guarantee that a fitting room will be available for you and a consultant will work exclusively with you during your appointment. Due to the volume of calls we receive, please be sure to advise us if you are unable to keep your appointment so that we may open up that appointment to another bride.

2.) We strongly suggest that you limit the number of guests you bring with you to try on gowns. One or two people whose opinions you truly value is all that you need. Too many external influences make your decision-making process difficult. Only you can truly decide when you've found the gown of your dreams!

3.) Since your initial appointment can be up to two hours, we recommend that children not be brought to the salon. They grow restless and bored quickly. This is a special time for you and other brides in the salon, so please be considerate. A separate visit for flower girl dresses is suggested so she can feel like a princess for a day.

4.) We ask that you keep makeup to a minimum. Also, please avoid perfumes and tanning solutions to protect our gowns.

5.) Please leave food and drinks in your car.

6.) We suggest ordering your gown minimally seven months before the wedding. The more time you allow, the better since you have to allow for creation of the gown, shipment of the gown and alterations.

Selecting Your Bra

I've been told I'm a bra nazi. Yes, it's true, because I want you to look the best you can in your beautiful gown on your most special day.

For the most part, and especially with formal gowns and wedding dresses, women must wear a bustier. Only those women with an A or a small B cup can get away with wearing no bra at all. Cups or pads can be sewn in to give these lucky ones a little lift or shape. What happens when you don't wear a bra is that your bustline sits a couple inches lower. Your dress was not designed to be the structure that holds you up, but rather to fit to the structure the undergarment provides. Making the dress tighter to hold you in place only makes the dress look too tight. The biggest misnomer out there, is that a bra can be sewn in. Sure a bra can be sewn in, but it's not going to do what you want it to do, except keep those puppies in place.

What does wearing the proper undergarment do and why is one important? The proper undergarment to wear with a fitted gown, with exceptions for dresses with no back or plunging front necklines, is a bustier. Bustiers are less restrictive than corsets and provide more comfort. There are two basic types of bustiers. Ones that come down to the waist and those that extend down past the waist 2-4 inches. A bustier is a strapless bra which has boning that runs vertically under the bust down, side seam to side seam. This gives structure and lift to the bust line while defining the waist. Most gowns are designed with this garment in mind. Bustiers come with a low back or a higher cut. Bustiers with a higher cut will give you the most support around the back, but some lower cut dresses need a low backed bra.

It's important to have a good fit when wearing any bra. With a bustier, especially the low backed ones, it can be a little trickier to find a bra that fits well. When trying on bras, make sure the underwire is cupping you. Underwires should fit against your rib cage. When trying on low backed bras, remember that there's no back so half the structure of the bra is gone. You will need to pull the sides back to get a sense of what it will be like once the dress is on. These bras work with a fitted gown by giving lift and relying on the gown to keep it fit against you. The cup should completely cup you from each side of your breast. Remember the bustier gives you lift, not necessarily cleavage. Pads can be placed to push you together to create the cleavage you want. Getting a bra that is too small in the cups can be uncomfortable and isn't the way to get the effect you are looking for.

How to measure for your bra size:

Use a measuring tape to measure around your bare rib cage, just beneath your naked breasts. This number indicates the band size most appropriate for your figure.

Measure the widest part of your bust, sliding the tape around the middle of your back. Hold the tape as level as possible to ensure accuracy.

Note the difference between the two measurements. Use the following as a guide, and try on a range of sizes above and below your measurement: If your bust measurement is up to 1 /2 inch larger than your band size, then your cup size is an AA. A measurement of 1 /2 inch to 1 inch more than the band size indicates an A cup, 1 to 2 inches indicates a B cup, 2 to 3 inches indicates a C cup, 3 to 4 inches indicates a D cup, and 4 to 5 inches indicates a DD or E cup.

Even with this guide, bras may fit differently. The important part is to find the cups that fit you best. Alterations can be made to make the lower structure fit tighter, and cups can be lowered if they are too high for the dress neckline. Sides seams of the bra cannot, so keep in mind the side neckline of your strapless gown when purchasing your bra.

Bring your bra to your first fitting for a proper fit. Different bras may cause additional adjustments to be made. If you're not sure about which bra, buy a couple and leave the tags on. Most department stores will accept returns. Please check on their return policy before purchasing. For many a modern bride, it's a nonwhite wedding.

Forget the garter, the four-foot gauzy veil, the crash diet. Of the many traditions surrounding the event every girl dreams about, none is more hallowed than the white wedding dress. In tulle or lace, organza or silk, that hue--snowy, spotless, sparkling white--is the eternal signifier of a blushing bride.

Or is it? In fact, white has only been donned by Western brides since the Victorian era, when, for her marriage to her cousin Albert in 1840, Queen Victoria set a trend by slipping into a colorless lace confection. The notion that white represents an unsullied wife-to-be seems to be an off-the-mark urban legend as well, with the color blue taking those honors ("married in blue, you will always be true," goes the old poem). And though the most iconic brides in recent memory--Lady Diana Spencer, Carolyn Bessette--walked down the aisle in the expected shade, designers have begun to offer alternatives, whipping up colorful gowns that some first-time brides are delighted to wear, tradition be damned.

"I think because of the challenge of doing so many collections over so many years, it's become important to find a way to express myself in something other than white," says Vera Wang, who has designed dresses in everything from platinum to eggplant. "It started off to keep myself from getting stale, but then it served as an inspiration to brides. It's a woman who is probably extremely confident who is going to wear color."

Take, for instance, Sarah Jessica Parker, who wore a black Morgane Le Fay dress at her 1997 wedding to Matthew Broderick, and Gwen Stefani, who pulled off a cotton-candy pink and white ombre Dior gown at her 2002 wedding to Gavin Rossdale. "Gavin had planned the whole thing--it was a pretty major wedding--one of the most emotional I have been to," recalls John Galliano. "It was part fairy-tale princess, part punk--just like her. We deconstructed corsets as well as played with antique lace, and dipped the hem in pink so it kind of graffiti-ed up the gown." Jennifer Connelly chose a black Balenciaga frock for her 2003 wedding to Paul Bettany, and the ever edgy Dita von Teese wore a purple Vivienne Westwood dress when she married Marilyn Manson in 2005.

Strong fashion-conscious women all, though Parker has regrets about her choice, which she says was made in an effort to deflect attention from herself. "I thought it was stunning" says Morgane Le Fay designer Liliana Casabal. "I've been doing a lot of red wedding dresses these days, and black too. They're a reflection of a woman who is sophisticated enough to know that her wedding is a chance to express herself."

The evolution of the wedding as a once-in-a-lifetime party has influenced the colorful gown's appeal; the event has become the everyday girl's version of the Oscars, and the dress an extension of her childhood fantasies of walking the red carpet. "The more traditional bride still prefers white or ivory, but the young girls...seem to like the idea of using colors," says Reem Acra, whose spring 2009 show featured traditional white gowns mixed up with vibrant ready-to-wear and vintage pieces, such as lavender gauze over a full skirt.

"A wedding dress is always about a certain dream, a fantasy--and that fantasy is often about being the star," says Marie Martinez, the head of haute couture design for Christian Lacroix, who closes his couture shows with an often spectacularly embellished wedding gown. Recently, Lacroix has dressed brides in flower prints, silver and gold taffeta, and shades of pink. "I think the dress itself also depends on the place and the theme of the wedding," Martinez adds. "Whether it happens in a church, in the country or in a ballroom, the dress will be very different."

Context inevitably influences the bride's choice; 14 layers of tulle plays well in St. Patrick's Cathedral, but how might it appear amid the glamorous dilapidation of an empty swimming pool? That's where Melia Marden, a New York caterer and daughter of artist Brice Marden, wed musician Kid America last summer, clad in a gold sequined Zac Posen dress. "Instead of having a beautiful 'wedding dress,' I wanted the most beautiful, special dress that I could have," says Marden. "I didn't even try on any white dresses, and I kind of regret it. But I knew what I wanted, and I felt like I would just be humoring myself."

For Analisse Bren, who works in interior design, the purchase of a Roberto Cavalli halter dress emblazoned with green vines and yellow lemons inspired the Garden of Eden theme of her wedding, in 2006, which was held at the Wave Hill estate, located north of New York City. "I wanted to wear something I felt comfortable in and reflected who I was at the time," she says.

Alexandra Posen, creative director of her brother Zac's company, was married in 2004 at their parents' Pennsylvania farmhouse, which inspired the crimson, fuchsia and orange dress Zac designed for her. "It was about the color of poppies in a field; The Wizard of Oz," says Zac. "My sister looks wonderful in white, but she's not a white-dress kind of girl." For the ceremony, the family let the grass grow long and cut a swath for an aisle; the guests sported pink parasols. "The dress just became a part of the whole experience," says Alexandra. "And my family's a little crazy--no one expected me to go traditional."

For the betrothed who prefer to toe the line between traditional and unique--or for whom a fire-engine red gown might give dear Granny heart palpitations--designers are accenting white dresses with colored ribbon, lace and panels. "Because a bride in white is so expected, there is something instantly special about wearing a splash of color down the aisle," says Oscar de la Renta, who last season showed an embroidered white gown lined in powder blue satin. When Amanda Peet married screenwriter David Benioff in September 2006, she chose an ivory de la Renta gown and added a black ribbon at the waist, "which made it seem more like a festive party dress and less traditionally bridal," Peet says. "I didn't want my wedding to be too serious."

Carolina Herrera has also flirted with color, adding a spray of blush to a hem and designing a gown with a green and beige lily of the valley pattern, while Monique Lhuillier has designed dresses in yellow and steel gray. "Bridal is really much prettier if you incorporate some kind of color," says Lhuillier. "It says you're not afraid."

One woman who paid no heed to the wedding-dress edict set forth by her long-ago Queen is British stylist Katy England, who married Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie in 2006 wearing a custom-made corseted chiffon Alexander McQueen dress--with an English country hedgerow print atop a layer of pink and cream stripes. "I'd selected colors for the dress that I considered to be much more flattering to my skin tone than pure white, and all my guests seemed to love it," says England, whose husband--clearly a good match--showed up in a suit embroidered with red roses. "But I'm sure that must be the same for every bride After all, real friends can only say how wonderful a bride looks on her wedding day."

A Brief Pause for Alterations

Scenario: Bride comes in for alterations appointment after shopping our store and then purchasing dress on the internet. She receives free shoes and veil with her internet purchase. Dress fits her from the waist down perfectly with just a hem needed, but the bodice is three sizes to big due to her figure. Fitting is done and estimate given. Bride makes pick up appointment and leaves. Calls back after thirty minutes and says the $381 in alterations are out of her budget. This after "saving" more than $400 on her dress alone through the internet and free sales perks. Plus she does not want to pay the $50 fitting charge.

Let's talk about alterations...and manners. Alterations are always needed on manufactured bridal gowns unless you're one of the lucky ones where they fit perfectly. Each designer cuts their dresses to a set of standard measurements and adjustments will need to be made depending on each person's body type and size. When you buy a manufactured dress, it is not a custom gown. Your measurements that are taken at the time of order are strictly to put you into a standard size determined by the manufacturer.

Unlike the clothes we normally wear, much more time and tailoring goes into altering a fitted gown. You're already paying a lot for this garment, and budgeting for alterations should be a consideration. It is the difference between having an ill-fitting garment or a dress that looks like it was made especially for you. In the scenario above, the dress will be unwearable until some major alterations are done. Otherwise one will be able to look down to her belly button standing five feet away.

These days it's hard to find anyone who can do bridal alterations professionally. Many times they won't be able to do the alteration, or in actuality don't want to. Dresses these days frankly are a pain the the butt to do bodice alterations. With built in bra like corsets, pleating, and at times no side seams, seamstresses will often be clueless as to how to attempt it. We take clients for alterations regardless of where you buy your gown, and love to restore family heirlooms, participating in an ongoing tradition of the ritual of the wedding dress.

In order to eliminate the embarressment of taking up the seamstress' and your time, you should have your budget in mind before making the appointment. Know that average alterations for a wedding gown are $150-$350. More if design changes are being made. A hem will average $150 alone. You should have your shoes and bra that you'll be wearing at the time of the wedding and a slip if you are wearing one when you come in for your fitting. Plan your first fitting about a month and a half before your wedding, allowing 2-3 weeks for completion. If your wedding is during the busy summer season, call ahead to reserve the most convenient time.

In the scenario above, I wouldn't be surprised if she comes back. I do wish her well in finding someone who can competively do her alterations and not charge her more, because seriously she won't be able to wear the dress as is and I'd hate to see someone give her a lower price and then do a hack job on such a beautiful dress. I've seen ruined dresses by less qualified seamstresses. Believe me I've seen it all in my 21 years as a professional wedding gown designer.

Allow yourself extra time by making your first appointment 6-8 weeks in advance of your wedding in case of any minor changes that could be needed.

I'm a big girl. A normal sized 26, so I can identify with those women out there in search of their wedding gowns and having a tough time trying to find any to try on. You want to wear what everyone else is wearing but if you find anything, it's modest and boring.

Most wedding gowns can be ordered in plus sizing. The best thing to do is try on the sizes you can for the style, then look at the smaller samples for details that you like. Try on strapless, 'V' necks, halters and straps. Try on fuller skirts and a-lines. Pull the a-lines in to a more straight or mermaid look to see how it looks on you.

Sometimes getting away from waistlines is the key, especially for those of you who aren't tall. Go for a princess line or empire line cut which elongates. Every one flocks to David's Bridal because they've got lots of ads for the low budget bride. Truth be told, their price range is the same as the average bridal store. Finding Someone to Alter Your Gown

It's interesting to me every time a bride (or bridesmaid) comes to me for help after having their gown altered by someone else, or has been told that a dress is inalterable. In all the years Victoria and I have been altering gowns, there has been none that we haven't been able to make work. There have been challenges of course, but we've always figured out a way.

Recently, a bridesmaid brought in a gown she had altered by a tailor on the east coast. There are differences between tailors and dressmakers that I'll relate later in this post. All the tailor needed to do to make this dress fit was take in the side seams on this strapless dress and hem the bubble skirt. These are the simplest of alterations. What he did was take it in from the neckline (bust) down to the waist and blend it out to the dropped waistline and claimed that hemming the bubble skirt was impossible. So in effect, it was fitted to the waist and flaired out immediately making it look bizarre. It was the most lazy display of "professional" alterations that I have ever seen. To open the waist seam and take it all the way down through the skirt was nothing in terms of extra labor and bubble hems are the easiest hems to do.

In finding someone to alter your gown, it is best if they speak your language fluently so that you can communicate and understand each other. They should have some experience in bridal alterations which can be more detailed and complicated than regular clothing alterations. You should not take your gown to a drycleaners for alterations, as these seamstresses usually are not well versed in altering bridal gowns. Most often they are not the ones pinning the alterations and do the work at home which means your gown is transported out of the shop to a home in who knows what condition, meaning there may be children running around, food, dirt, etc.

These days most people don't think about altering their clothes and are shocked at the how much they cost. It should be taken into your dress budget consideration, because formal gowns are fitted gowns. Unlike our unfitted every day clothes, these gowns are figure forming. Due to the nature of manufactured gowns, being that they are made to bridal industry standard size charts, rarely fit perfectly. As the case with different industries; such as general sportswear, bridal, and fabric store patterns, you'll find that a size 10 can differ drastically between these industries standard measurement charts. I can't tell you how many times someone will bring me a pattern for a dress and they've brought me the size they normally wear. When comparing their measurements to the pattern, low and behold the pattern is usually way to small and has to be graded up to fit. How many times have I had brides not understand that bridal sizes run small and if they are an 8 may need to order a 10 or 12? Even after studying the size chart they can't understand, or don't want to, that sizes are just numbers attributed to a set of measurements. They would rather have that size 8 rather then think they are a larger size, which really isn't the case at all, but is a matter of different industries clashing in a overly size-conscious society, which can be completely at odds with the popular muffin tops that people seem to proudly display. So when the dress comes in there is a lot more work, and at times nearly impossible to make that gown fit without some serious challenges.

So to the differences between tailors and dressmakers. Usually tailors are suit makers, working primarily with men and their garments. Dressmakers, well they make dresses and are well versed in creating gowns for women's figures. Both are extremely knowledgable in what they do, the different fabrics they work with, and the structure and design of the garments. I'm a dressmaker, and completely respect that I'm not a tailor and would certainly want to take classes in order to feel somewhat competent in that field.

Victoria and I have had many years of experience designing and creating gowns. When you have your gown custom made by one of us, we'll take your ideas and fabric you've chosen and bring it to the cutting table with the muslin (a basic bodice pattern we've fit on you) and use that as a basic pattern. This is where the magic starts, where we manipulate the pattern peices to do what we want them to. The shell of the dress is made and fit on you, then the inner workings, the outer details and finishing. For us it's quite fun, challenging and fulfilling. For you, it also can be fun, interesting, and satisfying because you have something no one else is wearing made just for you. There's only a few things you need: imagination, patience, the ability to communicate, and trust. Whether you have your gown altered or made, you need to be able to talk to the dressmaker and let them know your worries, concerns or ideas. Don't be afraid to do this. I've had a few people so intimidated by the process that instead of letting me know, they quit. This is your dress and probably one of the only times you'll ever have this kind of experience. Sort of like putting on a wedding, we're professionals here to help you. One of the funnest things you can do is bring a camera to your fittings so that you can have the whole process documented for your memory.

So, if you're looking for someone to alter your gown, not only should they be comfortable with the alterations, if they tell you it can't be done little flags need to be going off and you need to get a second opinion. Granted if it's too small it's going to be some work, if it's way too big we may need to get creative, but we've got creativity and the ability to think beyond the problem. The bottom line for finding someone to alter your wedding or formal gown is to find someone who cares about how you look and feel in your gown and has the skill to make it happen.

I'd like to introduce myself; blog author, wedding gown designer and alterations specialist, webmistress and witness to thousands of brides, bridesmaids, mothers and friends, shopper's habits in general, and industry changes over the past 20 years. That's just my "work" life. Before and after work I enjoy the blues, am an ad director for the Washington Blues Society, am an active member of a woman's sorority, and work out four days a week. I can tell you this...I'm not bored.

This blog is a collection of writings from me and other authors that I've found helpful in educating brides and those close to her about the dress buying process. Whether you are having a custom gown, or are purchasing a manufactured gown from us or any other bridal store, having alterations done, restyling and/or restoring your heirloom gown I can answer your questions and concerns.

I have lots of stories. Usually about shopping ettiquete, which we seemed to have lost over the last ten years due to the internet and big box stores. It always amazes me the way people treat what we call "samples", but are actual wedding gowns which we've hand selected and purchased from the designer for brides to try on and order in the size they need. We try to have a variety of sizes in different styles, but as with any bridal shops it is impossible to carry every size in every style and color. Even the manufacturers can't do that which is why it takes 12-14 weeks in most cases for the dress once ordered to be made and delivered.

Each bridal store, in order to carry a designer's line, has to order in most cases six or more styles two times a year. Most bridal shops carry five or more lines, so you can imagine the yearly investment they have to make just to have an account with these designers. Some shoppers think that the designers supply these gowns for free, and even that bridal shops are some sort of "outlet" for these designers. There are some who think it's ok to use bridal shop merchandise as try on's before purchasing a gown online for a deeply discounted price. I think what I'm most bothered about is that beyond thinking it is ok, they're ballsy about it. I've even heard a bride and her mother come in and say they were going to make the gown but wanted to try on our gowns for style and detail.

First of all, is this ok America? Does it feel good to use others for your own self gratification? Does it sit well in your heart? Personally I was brought up differently. But then I'm 43 and from a whole different generation. I grew up on an island in Alaska and bought my clothes from the Sears catalog sight unseen except for a small picture and tinier description. Everyone did unless they got down to the states and went on a shopping trip.

Now it's not that we shop owners care if you want to buy your gown on the Internet. Go right ahead. Personally I love to spend my money with shops that have the real deal, but saving money is valid these days with the recession taking hold. So take your chances like I used to ordering your garment and hoping it's not too small and is in a quality fabric. But know this from my experience of brides bringing in their Internet purchases for me to fix and alter, many of these gowns are knock offs and cheap ill fitting copies. Some are bootleg, sold by the Chinese manufacturers that are commissioned by our American design companies.

Comparing Internet prices to brick and morter shop prices is incomparable. On one hand you have small independent businesses with real overhead (rent, utilities, payroll, merchandise investment, ect.). On the other hand you have someone sitting behind a computer with a website, pictures, no inventory and a shopping cart that takes care of processing the entire order. All that person has to do is order it from a transhipper or bootlegger and reship it without even opening the box and looking at it. Is that all the wedding gown has become? It used to be a lot more special than that.

Beyond the importance of what was a spiritual garment which often were kept as keepsakes or passed on to daughters, I believe supporting our economy by purchasing through authorized independent bridal shops is important. Small businesses employ real people who in turn take their paychecks and buy things and services from you and everyone else. This is how the world turns, at least the American economy which is now in the toilet due to outsourced labor, morgage forclosures, a spiraling war debt, box stores, gas prices and other economy strangling problems. While we are finally "getting green" and thinking about our world as a whole, we also need to think about the impact we have on our economic growth.

One of the things, in my eyes, that used to be cool (when the wedding gown was more than an article of clothing necessary to the look of a wedding), was being involved with what should be an important, special and spiritual part of a woman's life. As a group we help each bride choose this garment in which she looks radiant, we tend to her dressing and fitting, helping her find those little accessories to complete the look. To us, this isn't merchandise we're schleping, it's being a part of someone's life if even for a moment, but one that she'll remember all her life.

Practical Tips for a Pleasant Dress Shopping Experience

There has never been a more glorious range of choice in wedding dresses than you'll find available today. You're certain to find a dress that makes you feel and look fabulous! Here are some tips that will make shopping for your dress a pleasant experience.

Shop Early

Think ahead and shop well in advance. Most designers require four to six months to produce a gown so you should be shopping at least nine months in advance. It's not uncommon for brides to purchase their gowns as much as 18 months before the big day. Shopping early will give you the best range of choices.

You'll also usually get the widest range of choices at an independent bridal salon that can do special orders from designers with distinctive styles, rather than the mass market chain stores.

Designer Names

Don't be too dazzled by a big designer name. You can expect top quality from a top designer, but judge the dress, not the label. Your mission is to find the dress that will take the groom's breath away and make him say a prayer of thanks as he sees you come down the aisle. The right dress will make your friends and family think, 'What a beautiful woman!' first, and 'What a beautiful dress!' sometime later.

Appointments

Find out if you should make an appointment with the store where you intend to look at wedding dresses. Many bridal stores prefer to have brides make appointments, and some require it. Find out ahead of time. If you make an appointment but need to cancel, let the store know in plenty of time. If you are not considerate enough to cancel an appointment properly, you are not enough of a grownup to be getting married.

Try-On Fees

Find out if the store charges a service fee for trying on dresses. DressFinder is seeing a growing trend for bridal stores to charge a consulting fee which will be credited to the price when you order your dress. This is a sensible approach when you consider the store's costs for providing services. You just want to know what to expect.

No Committees, Please

Go shopping by yourself, or with one or two trusted friends at most. This is YOUR decision, and you need to be able to listen to your own instincts about what dress makes you feel great. It's easier to hear what your heart says if you don't have a crowd with you.

Get a Babysitter

If you or the friends who shop with you have children, arrange for a sitter. This needs to be stressed: a bridal store is NO place for kids. While the adults are looking at dresses, a curious or bored child can cause hundreds of dollars in damages, or even get hurt. If you want to shop for a flower girl dress, arrange a dedicated outing to focus on that, and make your flower girl feel like a princess for the day.

Grooming

Before you go dress shopping, make sure you're freshly bathed and scrubbed, and wear pretty undies (no thongs, puhleez!). If your undies are too skimpy you might not be allowed to try on dresses. Wear little or no makeup. That protects the gowns, and it also lets you see more accurately which colors will be most flattering to your true skin tones. Avoid hairspray or perfume, and don't apply hand or body lotion unless it will have at least an hour to be absorbed. It's even more important to avoid tanning solutions. They can ruin a gown if the color smears. Leave food or drink outside the store.

Shoes

Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off. Many bridal stores ask customers to remove their street shoes at the entrance, to help protect delicate fabrics and long skirts from picking up dirt.
Most salons will not have you wear shoes while you are trying on the gowns. You will usually be standing on a platform or stool as wedding gowns are cut long. Unless you are 5'9" in your bare feet you will need a hem or you will need to request that your gown be made to the exact length to accommodate your height and shoes (this is called a hollow to hem measurement). The only time you would wear shoes is if you are being measured for a custom length. Most brides will have a seamstress hem their gowns and at this point you'll need to have the shoes you'll be wearing on your wedding day.

DressFinder strongly recommends that you stick with medium or low heels for your wedding shoes. You'll be on your feet a lot on your wedding day, and aching feet can ruin your smile!

Stick to Your Price Range

Decide on your budget before you go anywhere near a bridal store, and resist the temptation to try on more expensive samples 'just for fun.' Falling in love with a dress that's out of your price range will either break your budget or break your heart. Try on dresses within the price range that's realistic for you.

Bridal Store Staff

The bridal store staff will wait on you more closely than you're used to when shopping for other clothes. It's their job to help you find the dress of your dreams; it's also their responsibility to be protective about the store's expensive, delicate merchandise. So don't feel crowded if a staff member comes right into the dressing room to assist you. Enjoy the attention!

Comparing

If you end up comparing dresses from different places, make sure you have a clear understanding of what services will or won't be included in your purchase price. Consider all related costs so you're comparing true totals. A price that looks higher might in fact be very competitive by the time you add up all related costs.

Commitment: Final Sale

Be sure you understand that when you order your wedding dress it is a final sale. (Bridesmaid dresses too.) Buying a wedding dress is not like buying a mass-market T-shirt that you can return if you change your mind. Take that seriously, but don't let it scare you. If you can commit to a man, you can commit to a dress!

Guarantees and Service

Be aware that many designers will only guarantee their gowns if they are purchased through an authorized full-service bridal store. There are too many fakes in circulation for them to take any other approach.

Something else to remember is this: the majority of local bridal stores are independently owned, and each store's first responsibility is to their own customers. Do not purchase your dress from one place then expect another store to serve you if you need help with it. The store you purchase your dress from is the one that should look after you.

Karma

If you're thinking of buying your dress from some discount service, be sure you understand the risks, and don't waste the time of the real bridal stores in your shopping process. If you or your bridesmaids use a real bridal store to try on dresses, then leave and order from someone else whose no-services price is cheaper, you are not being a clever shopper, you are being a parasite. Your wedding dress is the last place you want bad karma from abusing someone'e services. Remember the Golden Rule.

Alterations

Wedding and formal dresses are more closely fitted than ordinary garments. Dresses are made to standard sizes (which can vary from one designer to the next), so unless you're having a couture dress designed especially for you (and paying couture prices!), expect the fit of your dress to be close but not exact when it arrives. It's normal that your wedding dress will need to be altered to achieve the perfect fit for your unique contours. (Bridesmaid dresses too.)
Allow for alterations in both your budgeting and your time planning. Some bridal stores handle alterations in-store; others will refer you to independent services. Altering a bridal gown is skilled and delicate work, and the seamstress is one of your most important partners. Note that it's the complexity of the alterations that will determine the price, not the amount that a seam has to be taken in. Whether the seamstress takes it in a half inch or three inches the price will be the same.

Be aware that many manufacturers charge extra for larger sizes in certain styles. Be sure to ask about that so you know all costs to expect.

BE REALISTIC ABOUT SIZE. If you have major diet or exercise plans DressFinder suggests that you buy your wedding gown at your largest size. All gowns can be made smaller, but the opposite (called releasing the gown) is more difficult, more expensive, and rarely looks perfect. One of the biggest decisions you will face as the big day approaches is choosing the perfect wedding dress. The process of shopping for a wedding dress can be a fabulous adventure, but it can also be stressful and overwhelming--particularly because a bride-to-be often starts shopping for her gown before many other details are determined. You might have had a clear mental picture of the perfect wedding dress ever since you were five years old. On the other hand, you may have no idea what you are going to wear or feel strange about the idea of wearing white. The important thing is to relax, and remember that there are as many different kinds of dresses out there as there are different kinds of brides.

Plan Ahead Take a few minutes to think about what you want. It will be helpful when you enter the maze of wedding dresses out there to know what your budget is, any details that are essential (i.e. I must have a full skirt, or my arms must be covered), and an idea of how traditional you want your dress to be. After all, if really a teal pantsuit would work best for you, it’s probably not worth your time to sort through racks of flouncy white gowns.

When to Start Shopping Give yourself ample time to plan- generally the rule of thumb is that you need to order your gown at least six months before your wedding. So you should ideally start shopping for your gown nine months or more before your wedding. (If you don't have this much time, its okay, just budget for some rush charges).

Be Comfortable! On your wedding day, you'll want to look great, but you'll also want to be comfortable- it will be hard to pose for all those pictures, dance, laugh and more if you're tugging your dress up or have boning jutting into your ribs. First- consider which wedding dress is most appropriate to your day – for example- consider a shorter tea-length or cocktail length dress for a beach wedding. If you're the kinda gal who likes to dance with her hands in the air, and anticipates doing the limbo, perhaps a strapless dress is not the one for you. Look for wedding dresses with removable sleeves or straps to give you the widest range of options.

A Dress that Fits Your Body Well Think about your body type and what kinds of dresses generally look good on you. Take a look at what you regularly wear that makes you feel confident and beautiful, and then look for a wedding dress with similar lines. If you’re having your wedding dress made, ensure that you have agreed on a fitting schedule and chances to make adjustments. If you're looking for a bargain at a sample sale, or discount outlet, you should budget money for taking the dress to a good tailor. Many designers will ask for two fittings, and will closely tailor your wedding dress to fit you.

Saving Money on Your Wedding Dress If money is an issue, remember that the most expensive kind of dress is not necessarily the best kind. Many brides find a bridesmaids dress in white or off-white that works perfectly, and is hundreds of dollars cheaper. There are thousands of dresses to be had at sample sales, Craigslist, and eBay. Consider taking pictures from magazines to a professional dress designer and getting a price quote. If you choose to make your own dress, don't delay. The sooner you finish it, the sooner you'll be able to attend to the many other details of your wedding.

Most of all, remember- this is your wedding day. Wear whatever makes you comfortable and feels like you. And have fun shopping for your dress. It should be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Your wedding gown will undoubtedly be the most beautiful dress you ever buy and probably the most expensive. Before purchasing your gown we suggest you inspect it carefully and check the cleaning and storage requirements. Wedding gowns are usually decorated with beads, sequins, lace and other ornate trim. This decorative trim may cause problems during cleaning. At the time of purchase you may want to ask the retailer for any suggested cleaning procedures that may come with the gown since many gowns don't even have a care label attached.

At the wedding your gown should be cleaned and protected for future use. For best results have your gown cleaned within the next several weeks. Remember the longer stains and soil are left in your dress the greater the probability of their becoming permanently embedded.

At the cleaners brides should share any experiences like someone spilled champagne in a certain area of the gown. Dry cleaning solvents do not remove food and beverages. Such stains must be pretreated with special cleaners before the garment is immersed in solvents. If invisible stains aren't pretreated they will become set with the heat of dry cleaning. Perspiration and alcohol are water soluble and won't be removed completely by dry cleaning solvents unless they are pretreated. Alcohol dries clear but the sugar found in alcohol turns brown with age.

Dresses with glued-on beads and laces are less expensive but are also candidates for disaster when dry-cleaned. Glue is softened in perchloroethylene (a common solvent used by dry cleaners) and lace and beads fall off. The finish on beads can also rub off and some, if made of polystyrene, actually dissolve. If your gown has decorations that are glued on, find a cleaner who uses petroleum cleaning solvent. Petroleum is gentler on some beads and sequins.

When the wedding is over, definitely have your gown cleaned and placed in a dust-proof, acid-free box suitable for storage. This will preserve the delicate laces, beading and fabric of your wedding ensemble. Store your boxed gown in an area that is cool and dry. High temperatures may cause oxidation of finishes or trims while moisture may cause mildew. If you follow this advice years from now your gown may grace beautiful brides in future generations.

Many of today's brides following the current trend of formal weddings are considering wearing their mothers' or grandmothers' elegant wedding gowns. These old gowns locked up for so many years in trunks and stored in the attic may look neglected but many of them can be restored.
A professional dry cleaner skilled in the restoration and treatment of wedding gowns can breathe new life into these heirloom treasures. Choose your cleaner carefully; not all are bridalwear specialists.

Before you make a final decision, have your dry cleaner look over your gown. He will check for tears and examine the areas which came in contact with skin for stains and grime. He will inspect the skirt and/or train for stains and decide whether or not the gown can be perfectly restored. Don't worry about yellowing...if the fabric is still good a restoration specialist can achieve amazing results.

WHETHER THERE’S A VISION OF THE PERFECT creamy frock dancing in your head or you have absolutely no idea what you want to wear to wed, the prospect of shopping for a gown is daunting. The choices are seemingly endless: For every budget and style, there are thousands upon thousands of gowns from which to choose. Don’t panic. Stop, take a deep breath and read on. You will find a dress that makes you giddy, and you will be gorgeous on your Big Day.

First Things First

ALL THE PROS WE TALKED TO SUGGEST doing research before pounding the pavement. “Flip through magazines and look at websites,” says Yolanda Cellucci, owner of Yolanda bridal salon in Waltham. “Check out different gowns by different designers to learn about price points, and to find out what fabrics and necklines and details appeal to you.” If you find pictures of gowns you love, bring them with you when you shop. As you’re looking at dresses, think about what would go with the setting, season and size of your event. “Where is the wedding going to be? How formal is it? How many guests will you have? Consider those things,” says Giselle Khoory, manager of Vera Wang Boston. “If it’s outside on the beach, you’ll want something with less weight. If it’s a formal evening wedding, you can do something with lace and beading.” When you start shopping for a dress, you can talk about these details with the staff helping you at bridal salons, and even if you’re not sure what’s appropriate, they can steer you in the right direction.

Finally, figure out a realistic budget range right away. “Let stores know your budget right off the bat,” says Kevin Holmes, general manager of La Reine Bridal in Waltham. “You don’t want to fall in love with a dress that’s way out of your price range.” Sticking to a budget doesn’t mean you won’t find something you love: “We have gowns for $800 and gowns for $9,000 and everything in between,” Holmes says. “If you see a dress you want that you can’t afford, bring a picture. We probably have something similar.”

Try, Try Again

WHILE IT’S GOOD TO START THE shopping process with an idea of what’s out there, don’t rule anything out too quickly. Our experts agree that brides should try on a variety of styles to get a sense for what works with their body and personality. “Try all kinds of dresses! There are so many cuts—mermaids, A-lines, sheaths—it can be overwhelming,” Khoory says. “Don’t be afraid to try something even if you think it won’t work. You might be surprised.” “Very few girls put on only one dress and know it’s ‘the one.’ I like to have girls try everything on,” Cellucci says. “That way you can see what doesn’t work, and you can see what makes you look and feel your best. Try a lot on before you make a decision.” This brings up another important point: Give yourself time to shop so you don’t feel the need to rush into anything. “Nine months to a year in advance is when most brides should start dress shopping,” Cellucci advises. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should need to keep shopping if you’ve fallen in love with a gown. “Don’t buy a dress if you’re uncertain, but if you really feel it, just get it,” Cellucci says. “You could make yourself crazy if you keep shopping after that—there’s no need to.”

Dealing With Details

RIBBONS AND RUCHING AND BEADING, oh my! Beyond the basic cut of the dress—which is really the most important factor in how a dress looks on you—there are dozens of other elements to consider. Sweetheart or halter neckline? Long-sleeves or strapless? Velvet or lace? This is the fun part. While each design season certainly sees its wedding gown trends (“There’s been a return to sleeves lately,” Holmes says, “and a sash detail is very popular right now.”), don’t feel obligated to follow them. “Wear what you like, what feels right to you,” Khoory says. “Wedding dresses should feel timeless. And a certain trend might not go with your wedding. What’s important are not trends, but the personality of the bride.” Cellucci agrees: “If a trend doesn’t work with your figure or lifestyle, don’t bother.”

When you’re not governed by what’s hot right now, the sky’s the limit in terms of what you can do. As with cut, try a lot of different things to see what feels right to you—and remember that you can make changes. You can add straps to a strapless gown, for example, or add a touch of sparkle to a lace dress with beading. Trust your instincts, and for a second opinion, shop with your mother or a trusted best friend—someone you know will be honest and who wants you to look your best. “Don’t bring 10 people with you,” Cellucci says. “They’ll never all agree on one dress, and who knows what issues might affect what they tell you.” If your gal pals are dying to know about your dress, Cellucci advises simply telling them that you can’t wait for them to see it on the Big Day, and that it’s beautiful. Because if you love it, and if it fits your body and your spirit, your dress will be beautiful, indeed.

Valentine's Day is one of the most popular days of the year to propose. It's a day that's already romantic, and that you know you'll be spending together. If you're planning a Valentine's Day proposal, check out these ideas for making the moment special and memorable.

Proposing in Front of a Crowd: Many couples go to the theater on Valentine's Day. If you're reasonably sure your sweetie is going to say yes, call the theater in advance to see if you can propose on stage. Look for a play or musical that has a weddings or love theme. The stage manager should be able to assist you in planning something theatrical and memorable. Don't forget to buy tickets early as Valentine's Day is a popular evening. A variant on this is to buy an ad at your movie theater that will show before the previews begin. Prices change according to area. You'll need to ensure that you get there plenty early!

Say it with Candy: Buy your sweetheart a heartshape box of chocolates and replace one with the engagement ring. She (or he!) may be surprised that you've gotten her such an inexpensive gift, but if you can get her to open it, the surprise will be on her! Another idea is to buy a bag of conversation hearts and find one that says "Marry Me". Casually share the bag of candy with her, having the special one hidden in your pocket. When she's not paying attention, slip it out and say "here, this one is perfect for you", then quickly follow it with the ring on one knee.

Recreating a First Date or Special Moment: Tell your valentine not to make any plans for February 14th, then make all the arrangements to recreate your first date (or another very special date – perhaps the one when you told each other "I love you" for the first time.) Make reservations for the same restaurant, get a tape for the car of the song that was playing on the radio, or make a picnic of the foods and wines you had that day. Don't forget to wear a similar outfit! In your own words, say that you've recreated the moment because it was the moment you met the person you're going to marry (or knew that you wanted to spend the rest of your lives together), then get down on one knee and pop the question!

On a Walk/Drive/Sail: Take some time to find the most romantic spot near you, then lead your Valentine there in a leisurely way, talking about why you are in love and why your relationship is so special. When you've arrived at the right spot, take a moment to drink in the scenery, then say something like "I wanted to bring you to a spot almost as beautiful as you are to ask you to spend the rest of your life with me. Will you marry me?"

At a Restaurant: According to a wine merchants survey, restaurants are the second most popular place for proposals (at home is the first!). It makes sense that restaurants are so popular, as you'll have a host of people to help you make things perfect. If a restaurant is in your plans, start off by selecting someplace truly special – perhaps a usual favorite of yours, or one with magical ambiance. Secure those reservations early and while you're doing so, ask to speak to someone about proposing that evening. They'll be experts on the nicest and easiest way to do it at their particular location – whether it's writing Marry Me on the dessert plate rim, or going for a walk nearby to propose before returning for champagne and dessert. Just don't hide the ring in food - you wouldn't want it to be swallowed!

Discovering the Ring Somewhere Unexpected: If you're generally not the romantic type, your honey will be suspicious if you suddenly want to go out for a fancy dinner or theater, even on Valentine's Day. Thus, put the ring someplace common in your house- this might be in the silverware drawer, in the butter dish, or tied to the neck of the first beer on the shelf with a note attached that says "will you marry me?". Try to be around when its discovered, so that you can drop to one knee to pop the question. An alternative to this casual approach is to bring in the local paper and nonchalantly ask, "Do you think we should announce our engagement in the paper?" When your soon-to-be fiance realizes what you've said, take the ring out of your pocket.

On the Radio: If your darling wakes up to the alarm clock set to a particular radio station, or listens to the same one at work every day, arrange to propose on air on Valentine's Day. Call the station at least a few days in advance to arrange it, or see if you'll need to buy an ad.

Jigsaw Puzzle: One of my favorite ideas, check out these jigsaw puzzles. Give your valentine the puzzle in a box, wrapped as a present. She/he will open it (perhaps being upset that their valentine's present is only a puzzle!) and start to solve it, only to discover that one piece is missing. You'll produce that piece hidden in your pocket, which reads "Will You Marry Me?"

Photo Album: Make an album of your relationship, with pictures of the two of you during important moments, and on the second to last page write "what will the future bring?" and on the last page write "how about marriage?"A Book with a SecretYour intended will open a Valentine's gift to reveal a book of love poetry. Most of the pages will be stuck together, but in the one place it opens, a slot will be cut out with the engagement ring inside.

The Language of Love: In a small blank book, write "will you marry me?" in a different language on each page. Start with the language your sweetheart knows the least, and lead up to her/his native language. Here are a few examples, although you might choose to add more translations. Spanish: Te Casas Conmigo?Esperanto (to a woman) Ĉu vi edziniĝus kun mi? (to a man) Ĉu vi edziĝus kun mi?Japanese: "watashito kekkon shite kuremasuka? Spring 2008 Trends

Although strapless seems to be hanging in there, Spring 2008 shows have been highlighting new designs with short flutter or cap sleeves. Also shown are off the shoulder portrait collars with or without three quarter length or long sleeves. If you're having a hard time finding anything but strapless, and can't wait for the manufacturer's to catch up, consider restyling your dress with added sleeves and/or portrait collar.

While the pull up skirt has lost it's mass appeal, it has morphed into side or asymetrical pull ups. Bubble hems are back and give a softer look without the stuffing of the 1980's. Mermaid styles have come back with the hour glass silhouette with the traditional mermaid or modified trumpet skirt.

Trends in bridesmaids have softer fabrics and shorter lengths.

Do you have your dress and need alterations?

What you should know about alterations.

Alterations are almost always needed on manufactured bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses. Each designer cuts their dresses to a set of standard measurements. Even if you measure exactly into those measurements chances are adjustments will need to be made to get the perfect fit.

Unlike the clothes we normally wear, much more time and tailoring goes into your bridal gown and the cost of alterations should be taken into account when setting a budget. It is the difference between having to battle with your dress on your wedding day or having a gown that looks like it was made for you and only you.

Plan your first alteration fitting about a month and a half before your wedding, allowing 2-3 weeks between fittings. Generally bridal gowns and bridesmaids only need two fittings, the initial consultation and pinning followed up with a final try on and pick up. The extra time allows for any little changes that could be needed. Please be aware that you will need your shoes as well as any undergarments for your fittings.

Seen beyond the ornament of an event, the wedding garments of both parties are the ceremonial expression of the joining of heart and soul. We feel that when working with a bride or groom that they are ultimately the designer and we the creators. We look for the essence of a person’s dreams, and to see one’s essence we must see beauty.

Victoria Glenn

As the owner of V Custom Design and Victoria's Bridal Couture, Victoria's designs explore dreams of simple elegance fashioned in rich silks to ultra modern confections created with fine imported lace. She has over 30 years of experience in designing with a particular emphasis on wedding attire.

Her clients include:
Melinda French (wife of Bill Gates),
Ernestine Anderson (Jazz Singer),
Kari Brock (Channel 4 News Anchor),
Christy Lynn (of KJR 95.7).

Today Victoria teaches fashion illustration and business at Seattle’s New York Fashion Academy. Other accomplishments include national and international design awards, a photographic tour of her gowns in London and Paris, and clients that attended Grammy and Oscar Awards events wearing her creations.

Debra Idso

Debra's distinguishing creations reflect her passion for detail. With over 20 years of experience designing wedding gowns and formal attire, she also devotes herself to restoring heirloom gowns from weddings past. Educated at Seattle Central College in Fashion Design, she studied with their last couture class.

Her clients include:
Jennifer Gardner (daughter of Governor Booth Gardner),
Julie Lee (Channel 13 News Reporter),
Kari Kazarba (Channel 13 News Anchor).

She has been voted "Best Seamstress" in the Seattle Weekly's "Best of" poll and her designs have adorned the spotlight on many Seattle's runways.

Do I need an appointment?

Walk in service is available although appointments are recommended. Please note that our least busy times are on the weekdays from 11:30 to 4 pm. Appointments are required for alterations and custom design.

How long does it take to order?

It takes anywhere from 12 to 14 weeks for a bridal gown to arrive in our shop depending on the manufacturer and the dress style. We prefer to allow about 3 weeks after it arrives for the alterations process. For your convenience, our alterations staff is located right next door. Once your gown arrives we will call you to let you know and set up your alteration appointment. Bridesmaids dresses take anywhere from 10 to 12 weeks to arrive. We can get most of our gowns in less time with a rush fee. Our sample gowns and dresses are also available to purchase. If they are not brand new, you may purchase them at a 10-20% discount. If they require cleaning, we can have that done for you for a modest fee. Shoes, veils, tiaras, undergarments and other accessories take approximately 3-4 weeks to arrive.

What do I need to bring with me?

You should bring the undergarments and shoes that are the height you will wear with the gown. We have strapless bras, shoes and petticoats for you to borrow if you need them. You may want to bring photos of the gown or dress styles you like. We also ask that you do not wear lipstick or a lot of makeup when you try on our gowns to help us ensure they remain in great condition.

Do you carry all sizes and colors?

Our sample gowns, available to try on, range from 6 to 18. Bridal sizing runs small. We do have a selection of larger sizes as well. Most of our gowns can be ordered in sizes 0-22. We can measure you before you order your dress and help you choose the appropriate size according to the manufacturers size chart. We have one sample of each dress style. If you want a specific color we can show you the swatch card which shows what colors the dress can be ordered in.
May I take photos?
We have contracts with our designers which do not allow us to have our clients photograph their designs before purchasing them.

What is the average price of a bridal and a bridesmaid gown?

The bridal gowns in our salon generally range from $400 to $1200. Bridesmaids gowns are generally $150 to $250.

What do I do if one or some of my bridesmaids live out of town?

You can have them get their measurements (bust, waist, hips and height) taken at a reputable bridal shop and call them in to our shop. Before we order the dresses we require payment which we can take via credit card over the phone and a signed gown order form. Usually we ship the dress to the bridesmaid so she can get any alterations she may need in her town. Shipping usually costs $15 per dress. We suggest that all bridesmaids dresses be ordered from the same shop so they may be cut from the same dye lot.

Can I return or exchange items?

All sales are final with the exception of certain shoes and undergarments. Once a dress order is placed, production begins immediately. Undergarments can be exchanged for a different size. Shoes can be reordered for a different size if you purchased them in white or ivory. Exchanging will incur a $15 restocking fee.

Can I be measured at your salon?

Yes. We can measure you. If you are not ordering your dress from our shop, we do charge a $10 fee for measuring.

New Location

Check out our new location located at 929 N 130th St, Suite 8A in Seattle. We are right behind the Car Toys at 130th and Aurora on the second floor. There's plenty of free parking available.

Our new store has hundreds of wedding gowns and bridesmaids dresses as well as shoes and accessories. Some of the lines we carry are: Casablanca, Venus, Allure, Mon Cheri, Novissima, Emerald Bridal, Dere Kiang, Kathryn LaCroix, Aurora Di Paradiso, Dessy, After Six, Alfred Sung, Bill Levkoff, US Angels, and Tip Top.

Walk in service is available, but appointments are recommended. Once you have selected a gown, we will measure you and order it in the size and color of your choice.
